Goblin Lands Peacekeeping Event Week 13: The Rogue Balgog

#1

Prologue
Few except the Quall N’drone really understood the Fire Giants of the Dimension of Kyr’pos. Despite their hard cracked skin and dripping magma-like secretions which ignited the air when they were angry, Fire Giants were not really giants at all. They were spirits, elementally attuned ephemeral beings that had evolved on the continents of the fire sea between the land of the Quall N’drone and the islands of the Aegelis.
The greatest of the Fire spirits had been called Fire Giants, due to their immense size by the K’iorn warriors who faced them. The Olgogs during the K’ias Wars knew them as the Kalokyyan, but that name had faded in use since the old culture was lost during the Goblin Genocide. Each of the Fire Giants ruled over many minor fire spirits which they treated much like hunting dogs. They hunted Quall and Aegelis, and hunted each other with little thought beyond the primal needs of the moment.
One such Fire Giant suffered a strange set of cirumstances over the course of a few weeks. Each morning as he awoke another of his pet fire spirits disappeared. Now for Fire Giants having a minor fire spirit disappear for an hour or even a day or two was not a rare thing. They knew that summoners on other dimensions regularly called away their pets for some mayhem. Overall the Fire Giants didn’t mind, because their pets usually returned well fed.
By the end of the second week, though, the Fire Giant was angry at the theft of his pets. By two months over thirty of his pets were gone, and he noticed, oh he noticed. So finally he decided he would find whomever was stealing his pets.
He waited until he saw the telltale flicker of Fire Leyas as it swirled around one of his pack, and he grabbed for it. At the same time the production of the Balgogs was increasing again into new varieties deep in a hidden Lur Union production site. An artificer botched his summoning so badly he never realized the mistake and pulled the Fire Giant directly into the Balgog body. It functioned to animate the Balgog much as a minor fire spirit would.
Not surprisingly that Balgog went rogue, ripping apart nearby guards and escaping violently from the depths of the mountain.
It wandered the lands near Tla’loc’al trying understand what was happening. A full scale production facility like this was beyond his limited understanding. He also knew if he didn’t return to Kyr’pos the rest of his pack of spirits would be taken by other denizens of that dimension. An old Kalokgog in soot-covered robes and a young Olgog in an earther-style suit met him as he wandered.
The old Kalokgog smiled and said, “Welcome Kalokyyan, to Der’al of the Olgogs. These lands are ripe for conquest, and ripped apart by many different different warring factions.”
“I don’t want conquest,” snarled the rogue Balgog, “I want my pets back.”
“Don’t want conquest but…” said the old Kalokgog only to be cut off the younger Olgog in the suit.
“Sir, who took your pets?” asked the olgog clone of the Old VLAD, as he adjusted the lapels of his suit.
“I…I…don’t know,” said the Rogue Balgog, “They had a mountain and inside it a place where they were trapping my pets inside these…these…shells.”
The rogue balgog motioned helplessly at his own artificed prison.
The Old VLAD motioned to the Kalokgog and said, “Off with you, follow his tracks back to the place he was made. And if possible, do the usual.”

“Replace a local with one of our own?” asked the Kalokgog.
“If any jobs open up, make sure they are filled with someone who reports back to me,” said the Old VLAD as he smoothed back his fur.
“What about the Kalokyyan?” the old gog questioned.
“None of your business,” said the Old VLAD, “Now on your way.”
The Kalokgog bowed and disappeared into a nearby shadow. The Old VLAD turned back to the Rogue Balgog and said, “What you need is something to draw your enemies out… Now they don’t quite know why you escaped do they? Then you have an advantage. Let’s go leave them a trail to follow, my new friend, and gather some incentives.”
“What are you called?” asked the Rogue Balgog.
“You can just call me Vlad.”

Part 1

Daron the Borvian Dragon flew from the sky above the Olgog pups and their captor. For this plan to work, it would require seconds of action after much preparation.
He could see Kolgol and Eru’Khaz riding their own Balgogs standing across from the Rogue Balgog. Eru’Khaz was trying to talk the rogue automaton down, after Kolgol had been unable to talk the creature into releasing the children. Then the Rogue Balgog ignited its fist threatening the trail the sticky crude that ran down the rocks to the small pool at the bottom of the ravine.
Daron’s eyes followed that pool and found the children in the center of it. The sticky crude spattered their fur, and their feet were standing in it. He dropped the soaked blankets onto the children as he landed on one edge of a blanket.
The Rogue Balgog roared in anger and hurled fires at the trail of crude oil. It went up like a fuze, and flames rushed down towards Daron and the kids.
The Borvian Dragon activated his artificed acid breath and cut a wide furrow in the ravine floor. The acid melted stone easily, and destroyed the potency of the oil in that furrow as well. The flames licked up but not past the furrow, and Daron breathed and sigh of relief as he began tossing the blanket covered children up to the large Brezans at the opposite end of the ravine.
The Brezans, Big Fist Small Feet and Dreggs, caught the kids one by one, placing them safely on the ground. They used the blankets to wipe the oil from the children, while singing songs to calm them.
The fire leapt the furrow and Daron took to the air moments before the entire ravine became a fire storm. Suprisingly though a pair of Karovian nomads began creating a flow of water and mud that slopped down the ravine walls. The flaming oil was put out in a cloud of black smoke by the heavy mud, which cut off all oxygen.
The Rogue Balgog roared its frustration at Kolgol and Eru’Khaz and fell to the ground but only long enough for Kolgol to approach closer. The Rogue Balgog leapt up with glee grabbing Kolgol from the back of his steed. Kolgol felt the floor below him grow slick, and used it to slip from the automaton’s grip still not understanding why the Balgog went rogue.
Eru’khaz was quick to order both his and Kolgol’s Balgogs in, having them grab the Rogue Balgog and hurl him back and away from their leader. The Rogue Balgog smashed into the ground and rolled a few feet before finally coming to a stop. Though covered in cracks the Rogue Balgog got back up and prepared to hurl fire. Instead the ground below him opened up. He fell into the tunnel and found pikes extending from the walls of the hole pinning him in place.
An igloo covered the top of the hole, but was quickly melted away by repeated strikes from the Rogue Balgog. The Automaton seemed to be excluding far more heat than a minor fire spirit could produce.
To Molf and Dolf of the OL’Lur they knew it was little time until the Rogue Balgog broke free, so they high tailed it back and signalled to Olav.
The Rhug’na’ru Steamtank fired its cannon at the signal.
The Rogue Balgog was hit straight on by the shell as it struck. Ripping apart the basalt body, the artificings split, and the Fire Giant was revealed in its full size. The Fire Giant roared and leapt through the air with a height and speed unexpected for its huge form. His fist stretched back before coming forward with enough force to cause the Steam tank’s back end to bounce up on its treads. The fist crumpled the front end of the tank, and locked the turret in place.
The Fire Giant roared once more before escaping into the distance.
Kolgol stood over the shattered pieces of the Balgog’s body, now beginning to understand what had happened. One of his artificers had summoned one of Kalok’s own, rather than a simple elemental.
He leaned down and destroyed the last few pieces of the automaton. While none of them knew what drove the Fire Giant on its rampage, they all deeply feared what the Fire Giant might do now that it had escaped.
