Goblin Lands 2 Peacekeeper Event Week 17: Rumbling of the Mag Der'al

#1

Prologue (known only to the EEF)

Field Marshall Jeremiah Strykker checked the stop watch feature on his multifunction datalink bracer again. He nodded slowly, “Sir, it doesn’t look good. Five attacks. One in Kalino, one in Chooru, one in Dumbar, one in Dunesphere and one in Kelvara. Each within thirty five seconds of each other.
This was a timed attack, sir. An effective terrorist attack by multiple cells in different cities.”

Across from him was a desk piled high with pictures of crime scenes, and behind that sat the severely thin and wirey form of Colony General Malthus in an uncomfortable looking metal chair.
Colony General Malthus gently tapped his lower lip with his pointer finger, so deep in thought he seemed to have not heard his Field Marshall. Jeremiah politely waited. He had worked with Malthus long enough to know the old bloodsucker was trying to find something in the data before him. The Colony General finally lifted a single sheet of reports from all the others.

“What does Mag Der’al mean?” he asked.

The Field Marshall wasn’t a translator mek, and he wasn’t a specialist on Olgog culture. Then again the question wasn’t directed at him. It was directed to the older looking Olgog standing off to the right.

“Commander?..I mean…Captain?” asked Jeremiah acutely aware that the Olgog who had once helped train him in leadership techniques was now a far lower rank. He never did find out what caused the Olgog to be knocked down so many ranks, and didn’t think it polite to ask Shiro. He felt bad for the slip of the tongue.

Shiro moved an errant braid out of his eyes, and pushed off from the wall he had been leaning on.

“Mag usually means nobility or could mean ancient blood,” said Shiro, “Der’al is the world, or it could specifically mean Refuge. The Mag Der’al are either the Worldly Noble, or the Chieftains of the World, or the Ancient Blood of the Planet.”

When Malthus heard the last title, he slammed his hand down on the desk, “I know the Ancient Blood of the Planet. They were a group of Freedom Fighters during the Genocide. They were one of the first terrorist groups I captured and interrogated during my first tour of duty in the south.”

Shiro often forgot his commanding officer had been around back then. Malthus had seen it first hand, while Shiro had only heard legends of the Genocide as a youth. When Shiro was born, Malthus had already been serving in the EEF for over one thousand five hundred years AFTER his service in the Genocide.

“I don’t feel good about the work I did during the Genocide. I stopped a lot of freedom fighters that were genuinely trying to free their people. The Ancient Blood weren’t one of them,” said Malthus tensely, “They were a cult, and they all believed they literally were being guided by planet Refuge to kill humans and human-sympathizers. They singlehandedly gave the Church of One enough propaganda material to keep the Colonial leadership off their back for over one hundred years. Bad stuff…bad stuff…”

“Yes it is, if their recent attack is any sign,” agreed Jeremiah, “Fifty colonists dead at a Caravan Station in Dumbar from a lightning storm artificed bomb. Thirty colonists dead and fifteen Oners dead at the site of the original Church of One Basilica in Chooru, conventional explosives. Fifteen colonists dead and one hundred and twenty injured near the main checkpoint at the wall of Kalino, from Krato-blood acid bombs. Truck bomb killed two hundred and nineteen worshipers Dunesphere. Chill Life Bombs on a River Boat carrying tourists killed seventy people and unleashed a trio of them as undead Kaeleochs in Kelvara.”

“Dunesphere deserved it,” grunted Shiro angrily.

“Even if the zealots of Dunesphere have been doing the same to other colonies for years, we are the military protecting all the colonies, even the ones we don’t like,” said the Colony General putting a calming hand on his old friend’s shoulder, “I know you spend a long time working with the Kalino underclasses. How are they responding to the attacks?”

“The usual way,” said Shiro sadly, “They are calling for blood. They want whomever was behind it nuked into oblivion. They want the criminals caught and executed. If it is the Mag Der’al behind this, and the colonials find out…they could push for a full occupation.”

“I wouldn’t allow it,” said Malthus, “Too much risk for another Genocide.”

“With all due respect sir, the choice would be out of your hands,” said Jeremiah, “If enough colonies call for a vote of No Confidence in you, they could have you replaced with a new Colony General. Dunesphere has been trying for it ever since the Inquisition discovered your little secret. The New Vorik royal family has been hoping to replace you with one of their favored sons since the end of the Border Wars. With Chooru, Dumbar, Kalino, New Vorik and Kelvara, they would have a large enough minority to push it through.”

“Then we need the perpetrators captured,” Malthus growled, “The Mag Der’al must be stopped.”

“What are we authorized to do?” asked the Field Marshall, “Some parts of the south are considered nature reserves by treaty. We should be careful how we proceed Sir.”

“Careful yes, but quick and thorough,” replied the Colony General, “Contact the VLAD Agency, lets mobilize them to get as much intel as we can. I want Special Forces deployed in capture teams with full air support and strider support. No orbital weapons, no starships, no tanks, I don’t want the Olgogs to think we are invading them, cause we aren’t. And Jeremiah No Nukes…”

“Sir Yes Sir,” Field Marshall Strykker replied, deeply troubled he had grown a reputation as happy to deploy atomics. Reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Part 1(known only to the EEF)

Captain Shiro stood watching the reports come in, knowing there would be resistance to EEF interaction. He was pleased to see already some of the leaders of the United Tribes of Refuge were taking a hard stand against the Mag Der’al.

He read the statement again, officially proclaimed at all four corners of the lands of the Auf Lal’al by Aufgog Lalder. “Terrorist attacks against the colonies will not be tolerated. We are not at war with the Colonies. Bombings and terrorist attacks against civilians hurt Olgogs progress, not help us. I remember the first years of the Genocide, I was young then, but there. Most resistance groups fought for Olgogs. But Attacks by groups like Mag Der’al made matters worse and gave the Church of One an example that Olgogs are monsters to the other colonies. It took too long for the Colonies to see through this and their own fears. We cannot let that happen again while we are so close to our freedom and safety for the tribes. For the sake of the younger generations we must move forward. We have a chance and we will take it.

I will remind that No terrorism will be allowed. No supporting Terrorist groups or knowingly help execute Terrorist attacks anywhere. Those that do will be dealt with harshly under our laws and traditions."

Shiro breathed a sigh of relief. Perhaps cooperation would prevail against these southern insurgents.

The Gang of Uf Mag’og had also opened up the territory of Brez to EEF spec ops teams. Shiro agreed with the Goblin King Urog’s assessment that the teams should be primarily Olgogs.
“If you wish to roam my territory, armed as citizens, you may. Luckily, citizens in Brez are normally armed. I will have spies tracking you, but I will not allow any harm to come to you. I want to know what you know, but also make sure that you’re tribesfolk are not hurt or attacked either. When you find out information in my territory, I ask you send messages with updates or persons of interest. You can send them in writing, for precious few olgog can write, even fewer read. Send them Shirley, Vektor, or myself. Vektor is known to General Mapel.”

From Brez another supporting message from the Heavy Falling Rock Tribe
“Hi, I’m Shugz, and I be talking for the Clan of the Heavy Falling Rock, Great Northern Army. No need to show me any pics or none of that, the Goblin King Urog said all he needed to say. Like he said, violence against the Earthers up north is cowardly. Fightin’ is for battle. These attacks are cowardly and UnBrezan. Too bad Brez is on verge of war. Say too much, heh. So we’re nomads, and we don’ really have much of a place of our own. In fact, we have no native lands. Got nothin’ to offer ya ‘bout asking questions or anythin’. But our fellow Army gogs give us shelter, which is all we be needin’. But bein’ a nomad accepted by your peers helps. We’ll be helpin’ ya find out what we can.”

Another message came in from Karov, another influential tribe coming out against the terrorism. Yagogi’al the Og’ab made a strong statement,“Greetings to all that have gathered here today that are looking towards a peaceful future. I have heard tales of went on in the colonies, and I have now seen images of the horrors that have occurred. This is a truly terrible act, and We, the Yagogi would not wish this upon any without reason. It is as if this were a new age to the Goblin Genocide, and now the shoe is on the other foot. THIS DOES NOT MAKE THE VIOLENCE RIGHT! We are in support of the ideas that the criminals be found and taken care of, punished or what have you. We agree that something most be done about this, but we regret to provide you with entry into these lands. I do not wish for the lives of my tribe to be upended by military action and your technologies.”

And from the pirates of Dol Kuglok who were in charge of southern Drewsport, another disheartening response.

“I have no insurgents here in drewsport, the only gogs here are my crew and a small church, the rest are humans that we have been protecting from the church of one. I have no love for the EEF, they are murderers and cowards. I DO NOT give permission to subject myself or my crew to torture or other information gathering techniques. They are my family, you see. My ships, my town, my home. It is sad that there were so many civilian casualties but this is a war sadly that the oners have created.” Dol wonders if she is making the right decision, they could help, or they could destroy all of the confidence that she and her crew has gained in this town. “Do you know how many times the oners tried to destroy this town of drewsport? Just how many civilians would have been killed because they were ‘tainted’ by us? We are such pitiable creatures, do you really believe that another genocide is not what they are vying for?”

Shiro sighed, cooperation was not to happen.

Then another console blinked to life. One always in the Colony General’s office and war-room, that had not been active for the past two years. An encrypted burst communication console that had not projected a single message since the apprehension of rogue operative Codename: Old VLAD and that operative’s imprisonment in The Goru Military Prison on the Barris Islands.

“EEF High Command this is a transmission with the highest level of security. Please have all non-essential personnel leave the War-room,” said the automated voice of the console.

Colony General Malthus put a hand up and said, “Hold stations. Shiro, get the Trinity on the line at VLAD headquarters. I want to know why the Old VLAD comm networks are active again. And I want to know now.”

Shiro motioned for Lt. Colonel Lockwood, from the signals corps.
“Lockwood, I need a secure commcrystal to Shinefox Shrell-fox at VLAD HQ 1. I’m not wasting my time with anyone else.”

Shiro and Lockwood left the war-room to call into the new VLAD base and find out what in hell was going on.

Colony General Malthus spoke his passcode aloud and authorized the console to begin its broadcast.

A ball of silver nanites rose on magnetic repulsors, twisting and flowing in the air into the form of a face. Then they shifted their surface color creating an exact replica of a face and head. The face was human, with blond hair, blue eyes and a harelip. His face looked neither old nor young.
He smiled an embarrassed smile, saying, “This console will confirm my identity and my verification through the Project:Sugarhill protocols.”

“It has been a long time, Agent,” said Malthus not looking happy to see the Cloner who tried to depose him twice.

“Sir, I know we don’t see eye to eye on the colonies. Since my imprisonment in the Goru I have learned of many dangers threatening the Colonies I love so much, and my pleas to have them heard have been ignored by my jailers,” said the Old Vlad.

“I am not revisiting your case,” said Malthus, “Just as you and your cronies didn’t give me any mercy when you tried to have me assassinated…and then failing that, illegally kidnapped and imprisoned me.”

“Im not calling to talk about my imprisonment Sir,” said the Old Vlad with a bit of gallows humor in his voice, “Im calling to tell you about a threat being perpetrated by the Warmonger Cult down in the Goblin Lands.”

“What threat?” said Malthus believing it was just more of the spy’s trickery.

“In recent months, some of my old loyalists stumbled upon a group of Sword Giants living in the mountains worshipping the Warmonger Cult. They were blessing members of their number as Warmonger’s Priests. The Sword giants had enslaved wild giants to their army, drawing in a large enough number to threaten any of the southern cities. They hired on an Olgog Vampire and his raiding band to kidnap feral shamans, and those ferals who crafted tents and gathered food needed for the giant army and enslaved them. Leaving the remaining ferals leaderless and struggling.
The Yyan Army were working alongside Unit 111 Dead to outfit and armor themselves with enough artifacts and relics that my compatriots had to act.
These mad giants were even going to bring back the ancient giant High Priest of Warmonger. They call him the YyanGor MagHouk MagMagGor.

My operatives infiltrated the Cult Ceremony and shut him down. Last thing Refuge needs is the Giant equivalent of the Devil Bishop Kasanth running around. So they switched some of the ritual bones with bones pulled out of the MagHouk’s stomach contents box, and set a few explosives to cover their escape.

The plan worked a bit too well. The Cult resurrected the wrong bones, and the explosives made sure everyone thought the remains of the MagHouk Giant were destroyed. Wins all around.
Till my compatriots discovered what had been resurrected was an Olgog infected with some sort of biological control module.”

“Don’t waste my time if you really need my help,” said the Colony General, but his ears perking up at the words biological control module.

“I wouldn’t dream of it, Sir,” putting a little too much emphasis on the sir, the Old Vlad was grinding his teeth, and the nanite communication console showed it, “I am aware of your entire service record sir. I also know that during your first deployment as an interrogator you were hunting a terrorist group called the Mag Der’al. Olgog linguists who learned Earther called them the Ancient Blood of the World. From the way half your staff just turned their heads, I’d assume you have recently been attacked by these Mag Der’al? It was only a matter of time. Now these Mag Der’al was there anything strange about their interrogations…or their autopsies?”

“Eyes clouded by what looked like dried red blood,” said Malthus remembering back to that case so long ago, “Obvious calcium depletion in the bones. Higher than average red blood cell counts for Olgogs of the same region, and stress fractures in all long bones crusted over by some biological material high in iron and highly flamable.”

“Was that all?” asked the Old Vlad now with a grim look, “Sir?”

#4

“No…any Olgog exposed to the high-iron biological material would soon contract the same condition. 10% of those Olgogs exposed succumbed to coordinated violent behavior. If the Olgog had recently experienced the death of a loved one at human hands, or recent torture, the infection rate jumped to 95%.”

“Sir did you just say coordinated attacks?” asked Jeremiah, “Like a hivemind? Or Psychically coordinated?”

“Nothing that advanced,” said Malthus, “They would be seen congregating together, talking. It was only once they deployed themselves in groups that the talking stopped. In unit tactics they seemed to use pheremones to communicate when to attack. Humans couldn’t pick up the scents so we didn’t know. Thats how I ended up stopping them. I discovered what pheremone they used to signal an attack and released it…with snipers waiting on the nearby roofs. Anyone who went rust eye got an incendiary round to the head. The bodies were hurled into the plasma furnaces so the infection couldn’t spread.”

“I believe it was a member of this Mag Der’al who was brought back instead by the Warmonger Cult. The explosives scattered his blood and biological matter across the gathered Giants and some of their Olgog slaves. The Giants were confused and frightened but otherwise unaffected. The olgogs had much more extreme reactions. The biological matter somehow infected them, and they slaughtered a lot of Giants before they fled with weapons and explosives,” said the Old Vlad.

“This should be a full quarantine event, sir,” said Jeremiah, “We need to mobilize Special Forces in every colony.”

“No need,” said the Old Vlad, “My old friends in the 99s, the Scarabs and the Duskan Archers have already used the Colony General’s old trick. The deathtoll has been tolerable.”

“What is not tolerable is you running criminal assassinations across my Colonies!” roared Malthus bearing his fangs and his eyes flowing into darkness.

“With all due respect, Sir, You no longer have the spine to handle this situation as needed.” said the Old Vlad, “I still remember when I thought you would make a good member of Glomhammer’s inner circle. Now, you and Glomhammer and McMurphy are broken men. Unwilling to make the hard choices. But I still love these colonies, Sir. And I will not see any threat make my beloved colonies kneel before any other group. You do not realize the danger these Mag Der’al represent.”

“Oh I do…, and I also know they only spread when we oppress these people,” said Malthus, “Call your people out. Let us handle this the right way. For once please…”

“Okay,Sir,” said the Old Vlad, “Maybe I will just let you handle it. But the lives…the lives will be on your head.”

The console shut off.

Jeremiah turned towards Colony General Malthus, “Sir you should have told me about the Mag Der’al. The biological component. I can’t do my job without all the information.”

“I was hoping it was a copycat,” said Malthus with a sad sigh, “Its like all the crimes of my past are coming back to haunt me and threaten all I have helped the Colonies build here.”

Part 2

Mama Rapi’gog and Navigator Turin met the EEF agent on the beach. They were in a beach cove exposed by low tide. The desolation and rough terrain of the area insured the meeting would be secret. When the pair first looked at the rendezvous point Turin remarked, “Dark Water hasn’t made it here yet.” Mama Rapi’gog nodded. Unen’s lifeblood had come under assault by the Church of One’s legacy.
The earther dressed in kakhis and a short sleeve blue button down shirt and a Panama hat. He looked like a diplomatic bureaucrat but he moved his eyes were quick. After an acknowledgement to the pair he scanned the area and moved with a subtle grace of someone accustomed to being in unpredictable situation toward them.
“I’m Mike Cameron, EEF diplomat to the region.” He said offering his hand, first to Mama Rapi’gog and then the Navigator. Turin glanced knowingly at the self-proclaimed diplomat.
“We got da message, da Colonies have a grievance and you want to send in da troops?” Mama Rapi’gog stated matter of factly.
Mike didn’t flinch at her blunt statement, “I’ll tell ya, it’s got the colonies riled up. They are demanding answers and Justice. A show of good faith on your part would go a long way to extinguish the embers.” He said taking off his hat and fanning himself with it.
Mama Rapi’gog nodded, she liked this politician he seemed honest. “Dis ting you ask it could spark anger here. Your soldiers they seen here da tribes dey say it an act of war. Da United Tribes didn’t authorize it, Da GUTS weak if dey let da troops just come in.”
Mike nodded with a smirk, “It’s politically tense I agree, we can reach a compromise though?” he asked.
Mama Rapi’gog nodded, “If dis happen da other way, peoples from da colonies come blow up gog we would demand the same ‘ting you do, but much louder.” She thought about it, “We need to know what you know about Mag Deral.”
Mike nodded and retrieved a folder handing it to Navigator Turin, “This is everything we can release.”
Mama Rapi’gog nodded, “In da GUTS I tell da other gog you helping us catch them. We work together keep da trade open between da colonies and Unen.” She paused choosing her words carefully, “In da UTR, unless the council give an official statement, we be more careful. I launch an investigation that get answers, dat no problem. You want to act though.” She said.
Mike nodded, “If we can get results it need not be an official deployment of troops.”
Mama Rapi’gog nodded, “Da Bruskti in da UTR will not stop your forces, but other tribes catch dem, or they caught committing crimes…” She shrugged, “Da Kul Gul Rapi can’t make treaty or agreement with you. We tell you as much and you act anyway.”
Mike nodded, “We are very good about being covert, but I understand, if the team is compromised everyone will deny anything ever happened.”
“One more ting.” Mama Rapigog said. “Da opposite ever come true, you give us dis agreement in return.”
Mike didn’t say no, though he really wondered what the Colonial news would say about foreign vampyrs being allowed to hunt in colonial territories.

Part 3

Yayi the trumpeter watched the sand move near his feet. He was confused, by the sparkling lights in his eyes. As he turned abruptly he saw a Yagogi Go’ab point at him and yell something. But both ears felt like they were underwater and he couldnt make out what they were saying. The Gor’ab’s Zela sword flashed up striking Yayi in the chest.
From the wound flowed a goopy dried blood that immediately plugged up the wound. His hand moved forward of its own accord and knocked the Gor’ab back with an open palm strike that sent him flying over a nearby dune. Then the sparkling and the pressure in his ears was gone.

Yayi looked over and saw Bazman approaching him fearfully, “Are you…you okay?”

“I feel better,” said Yayi, “But there were a few moments when a felt kind of ill.”

“Your eyes, they changed,” said Bazman, “And the zela blade did not seem to harm you at all.”

Yayi was taken in by the Gor’ab for studying. All they knew was that which was in Yayi did not show itself again even in the presence of Zela metal. It was no Leyas curse…it was something far more insidious.

Part 4

It had been along time since Valurk had left the confines of the Lab. He didn’t mind being underground, in the dark. But, after a while, even a Dead Olgog like himself wanted some color. Some light.

Lotara had returned a few days ago, and was busy converting the Oners that her father had dropped off about a week earlier. She was here, though, so Valurk thought it would be ok to go outside to get some air. He didn’t need to breathe, but he really couldn’t think of a better way to word it.

He had just set foot outside, when he was met by a scout. “Sir,” the scout began. “We may have a situation.”

Valurk grunted in frustration. “What?”

“About five miles out,” the scout said. “We have, uh, in our custody, what appear to be three messengers. From the EEF.”

“So?” Valurk asked, his brow furrowing. “Explain how that warrants being called a ‘situation’.”

“Well, sir… they are requesting an audience with Lord Krodnok.”

Valurk’s expression lightened a bit. It was still kinda funny to him, hearing the underlings refer to Krodnok as ‘Lord’. The perks of being a God, he thought.

“Alright,” Valurk said. “Take me there.”

They were only able to Shadow Walk steadily for about 1/4 of the way. But, when they got to where forest-met-desert, that method of travel stopped being as effective. Occasional sand dunes gave enough shadow to travel through, but aside form the occasional cluster of dunes, the pair mostly walked the rest of the way until they reached their destination. Once there they found two of Krodnok’s Warmachines, three more Dead scouts, and a trio of Earther EEF messengers.

“Seriously?” Valurk inquired at the scout who had retreived him. “You really saw fit to contain them here with the Warmachines? They’re MESSENGERS!” He looked over the EEF representatives. While they each appeared to carry some sort of sidearm, they weren’t armed heavily. “Overkill. That’s what they are,” he said, gesturing to the Warmachines.

He turned to address the messengers. He didn’t necessarily like Earthers, but, for the sake of diplomacy…

“What are you doing here?”

The messenger in the middle took a step forward. “We seek an audience with Krodnok. We’ve been told that he resides somewhere in this area.”

“Well, you’re a little off,” Valurk replied. “That’s good, though. If you knew our location, we’d have to kill you. Anyways, Krodnok isn’t here. What do you want?”

The messenger who had first spoken looked back at his comrades. One of them gestured with his head at Valurk, while the other just nodded. The first turned back to face Valurk and pulled a folder out of his bag. He held it out to Valurk, who took it.

“Those images you’re looking at are from the city of Duneshere,” the messenger explained as Valurk opened and looked through the file. “Pretty grisly stuff,” he added.

“I’ve done worse,” Vaurk said absently.

The messengers eyes narrowed, but he continued. “I have folders here from four other cities. They all look more or less the same, however.”

Valurk closed the folder and held it out to the messenger. “So? What does this have to do with us?”

“These attacks were orchestrated with precision by a terrorist group known as the Mag Der’al,” said the messenger to the left of the first. “All five, happening almost simultaneously.”

Valurk was clearly growing impatient. “Again, I ask… So? What, do you suspect us of some involvement?”

“No,” the third messenger spoke up. “We are here to ask for your assisstance.”

“Assisstance?”

“Yes. Assisstance,” the first messenger replied. “We aren’t sure where this group is based, but we believe they are recruiting from anywhere and everywhere. That includes your territory.”

The third messenger spoke again. “And, if they aren’t recruiting, they are at least moving through your lands. Supplies, weapons, troops…”

“What we want to do is post troops in your lands, and deal with this group,” the second messenger said.

At that, Valurk started laughing. “Yeah, no. No. You aren’t sending troops to our territory for ANY reason. We will, however, lend you our assisstance. For a price.”

“We’re messengers,” the first said. “We aren’t authorized to negotiate like that.”

Valurk smiled. “I expect you have a way to contact your superiors. I’ll name my terms, you send a message, we wait for a reply.”

The messengers nodded.

“Good. Now, as you can see,” Valurk began, gesuring to the Warmachines and scouts, “we are a group of Dead Olgogs. As such, we don’t need some of the things that you do. However, we have recently taken in a group of Ferals, and they AREN’T dead. What we need, as payment for keeping our lands clear of these ‘Mag Der’al’, is food and water. Every month. Enough for at least 50 Olgogs. And seeds, so we can plant and grow our own food, so as not to have to rely on others for too long.”

Valurk crossed his arms. “Those are our demands. Contact your superiors. I’ll wait.”

The EEF messenger came back a few moments later.

“Sorry sir, but you have been turned down. The EEF is not paying off any tribes with food supplies,” said the messenger, “I will take my leave now.”

“Go,” said Varluk, “But tell your masters they have made an error today.”

Varluk found his mind occupied with thoughts of the Mag Der’al on his way back to the laboratory. His scouts had been sent out to capture as many of the insurgents as they could.

He was suddenly knocked to the ground. Believing it to be a Feral, whose attacks were simply annoyances he drew his magi cannon as he stood up. He fired a warning shot, surprised when the feral didn’t run away. Then he noticed the clothing of the Olgog that attacked him. It was no feral, this Olgog was wearing the fine chooruvian silk of a traveling merchant. But his eyes…his eyes were like dried blood.

The creature scored a pair of strikes on Varluk’s chest with a big steel knife that would have killed a living Olgog. Varluk used the cutting beam of the magi cannon to slice the Olgog in half. Inside its body, he found a strange material. Being the inquisitive sort of undead he took a sample of the rusty material. He watched as it tried to bond with his dead flesh, but was quickly repelled by the forces animating him. Apparently this biological material did not like undead flesh, Varluk surmised as he gathered more samples for experimentation.

Part 5 (known only to EEF)

“EEF,

Understand that what I am doing is not in any way any great thing. I will allow your soldiers to travel in my lands, but bring no flying or hovering machines while within them. There will be no explosive, leyas use or any sort of fire weapons. You also have no access to our town or any peaceful settlements within the lands we call our own that do are not sided with the terrorists. You will give us a description of what these terrorists may look like, what they may wear and whatnot so we may keep an eye out in Rhug’na’ru proper as well. You will only be allowed to hunt in our lands for these terrorists after you bring the equivalent of one quarter of your supplies and weapons as a sort of payment to our front gate. After which you will be allowed pass through without hassle or any diplomatic repercussions.

These terms are nonnegotiable.

High Captain Reshed, Leader of the Rhug’na’ru"

Jeremiah grew increasingly annoyed as the response after negative response from the tribes trickled in to High Command. Captain Jeffers stood at parade rest as he conveyed the contents of Rhug’na’ru’s response.
“So what you’re telling me is that for the most part the tribes are flatly rejecting us and several of the others want payment on an indefinite basis to judge by their messages. And I don’t even understand what Reshed means by one quarter of our weapons and gear. Is that for the whole EEF, the teams we’d send to their lands? The teams we’d send to the wastes in general?” Jeremiah stated rubbing his eyes.

“Don’t forget about Olgog the Olgog’s offer, Sir” General Giffords said laughing as he reviewed that message. “It’s very generous of an insane terrorist to offer to handle the problem for us.”

Captain Jeffers shifted uncomfortably. “With respect General this is serious. With so many of the tribes refusing or making demands in exchange for their help finding the Mag Der’al will be nearly impossible. Even the tribes that agreed to help are limiting what they will peacefully allow in their lands. Which is going to make an already difficult job even harder.”

“Some of them don’t even seem to understand that there is a difference between the Church of One and the rest of the Colonies.” Observed General Ma’ple sadly as she reread the report of Dol Kuglok’s reply, “Haven’t we been trading with this tribe for months? Yet now their leader speaks as if the Church of One spoke for all the colonies. They demand understanding but refuse to give any in return. It seems to be regrettably common amongst the tribes.” She signed recalling her long negations with Vektor speaking for the tribe of the Uf’Magog.

Jeremiah chuckled at that.
“I had noticed that. They act like we’re one big body when really each Colony runs itself. It’s like herding cats around here. The real irony is that we’re set up pretty much the same way they created their own United Tribes of Refuge. Not that I expect any of them realize it.” He shook his head.

“You know what really gets me thought. We have spent the better part of the last year bending over backwards for these people. They want a hover train line moved, we move it. One of their communities get attacked by a terrorist we catch him and turn him over. Then send recovery aid to them and ask nothing in return and then say nothing as they let him go pretty mush scott-free. A giant ancient nightmare attacks another city, we send help no questions asked. Demonic incursion in their lands? We banish it. They create a new government? We recognize it with no conditions. A train full of Colonial citizens gets hijacked. We stand back and trust them to handle it. We spend months making sure the other colonies don’t get duped into backing Duneshpere in attacking them. We help set up trade for them with colonial merchants. Hell a few weeks ago Tla’loc’al almost broke the Iron Republic treaty by flying their rock spaceship into orbit. Did they even bother to apologize? Nope.” He signed. “So after all that we go to ask them for help, you know just for a change, and this is how they answer.”

“Bunch of ingrates if you ask me. I’m sick of this endless Green Privilege.” Grumbled General Giffords, “You let me and my boys off the chain, Field Marshal and we’ll change their tune. I promise you that.”

“Easy General, our current frustrations aside I’m not ready to do that and I doubt the Colony General would authorize a full scale invasion anyway. Besides attacking them would only create more terrorists.”

“Than what is our plan, Sir?” asked General Ma’ple, “We can not just ignore this situation.”

“No we can’t so here is what we’re going to do. First, Captain Jeffers send a message to the tribes that offered assistance without asking for payment and dispatch investigation teams of non-earthers to the tribes and earthers to the former church settlements with our thanks to their lands to start looking for clues. As for the rest of them we’re done. I want the border sealed all trade, and travel will be suspended until the United Tribes of Refuge can send a representative to speak for them, and negotiate new terms for trade and travel, and dealing with any future terrorist attacks.”

Part 6 (known only to Kolgol)

Kolgol watched from above as the Olgogs feasted and drank, and raised their cups in toast to a union between Mag Der’al and Ka Rhug. Then the floor dripped away, dropping the Olgog rebels into the fires below. The heat quickly cooked the bodies. From them oozed strange creatures that looked like they were shaped from drying blood. They leapt upon the Ka Rhug Legionnaires, taking over them.
The infernal Balgogs were quicker, lifting up the infected Ka Rhug, and hurling them into the lava as well. The blood beings tried to pull away again but no more hosts were in range and they were left sinking into the cauldron of Mt. Rhug The creatures cracked and hissed away, melting in the intense fires of the lava of the mountain.

When Kolgol saw the evil beings die in the fires he knew in his heart that Kalok had once again cleansed the pollution from his tribe. The cost had been high, but cleansing such a poison well worth it. And he had learned two other great facts, first that the creatures could be destroyed by immersing them in a volcano, blessed be Kalok. And second, that the Balgogs were immune to the powers of the Mag Der’al.

Part 7

Lord L’gani, Steward of the Redeemer, Clerk of Northern Drewsport stood up and looked over his missive again.

"Sirs,
This notice is to let you know of our response to your missive. We believe that we can work with you to solve this problem. As terrorism is against the peace of falos and counter productive to the welfare of those under our protection, we feel that we must take steps to solve this problem. But as the forces of the Earth Expeditionary Forces have been involved in attacks, apparently unsanctioned, we can not give you free reign to proceed without supervision and oversight in the areas under our protection. As such is the case, our proposal is as follows:

  1. Any forces you deploy in or around the Freetown of Drewsport will be accompanied by an observer to verify that they are follow rules and procedures.
  2. Any native or citizen of the aforementioned region will be delivered to be tried in Drewsport by its citizens. Anyone found to have committed criminal activities will be either dealt with locally or remanded to your custody based on the decision of the local court.
  3. In a Concurrent agreement, We request that in the future, if we need to track down criminals escaping to the Earther colonies from the region, that you will provide similar escorts and oversight.

Prepared for the forces of the redeemer by:
Lord L’gani
Steward of the Redeemer
Clerk of Northern Drewsport"

He grew concerned that the EEF never answered them on point three. He personally couldn’t understand why the earthers wouldn’t trust the Redeemer’s Forces to hunt criminals in the Colonies. But on point 1 and 2 they had agreed

But the EEF forces had been acting for hours and already a cell of five Mag Der’al terrorists had been found in the heart of Drewsport. One, Siri, had even been working at the most beloved taverns in town, and many considered her a friend. When they were told they were being tried locally, the five Mag Der’al gave themselves up without a fight.

L’gani asked for Siri to be brought to him. The young olgog female had lived in the lands near Drewsport for years, and joined the society soon after it was reborn as a haven. He had seen her often on his trips to the tavern to meet with local community leaders. His long fingered hands motioned for her to sit down in front of her.

There was an odor about her, that L’gani remembered from years before. But no…how could it be?
A Noble Blood here? He thought as he looked at Siri. She gave him the calmest most unsettling look. Part child, part predator.

L’gani raised a hand and annihilated her face. The body struck the ground, and a rusty red slime oozed from the wound, wrapping itself around the severed brain stem and then trying to rush away. He hurled another pair of bolts removing the creature from existance and some of the floor of his office.

L’gani stepped calmly to the door, and opened it. He leaned out to the Olgog guard there, asking, “Please have Torkol’ab sent for. Tell him it is urgent. Ask if him he remembers the hunting beasts used by the Nightmare Lords. They were called the Noble Bloods. Creatures made by fleshweaving, that could momentarily possess another species to act as a war-dog for the Nightmare Lord.
I have never seen a Noble Blood like this one. I think it has mutated into something…something new.”

Part 8 (known to Mag’Nrs only)

“I seek no ill-will, and would do whatever I can to be helpful in the pursuit of those responsible for the villainous act that struck down the colonies. I would like to act as an ally of my homeland, and strike up beneficial relationships. I am here to find out more about my people, my heritage and in general who I am. I have heard that Morgothians, and the EEf both have bad reputations with each other. If it will help, I have been trained by Sir Killian, and look to be respectful as a Paladin of any order of Refuge. I thank you in advance, and will do whatever is in my power to help authority get to the bottom and get the answers needed to piece the attack together.”

Sir Mag’nrs was on his back to his church, walking along the beach, after his meeting with the EEF.
His carefully prepared speech echoing through his head as he thought of the dishonor he had suffered.
They had said they would keep him in mind, but that officially Morgothians were also labelled as terrorists by the EEF. If he came back they would probably have to shoot him on sight.

Halfway home, he was called over to a copse of trees by a strange noise. He saw an Olgog male straddling an Olgog female. They both were dressed like ferals, but it did not look like a willing embrace. He drew his sword and strode over, calling out, “Remove your hands from her vile rapist!”

The Feral male rose up, the throat of the female, in his jaws. But the female’s wounds healed instantly by rusty red ooze, and the female hurled the male up and against a tree. He hit with enough force that Sir Mag’nrs could hear the snapping of the feral’s back. Reassessing the situation, Mag’Nrs now pointed his sword at the female olgog who rose up with her eyes clouded in rusty red.

He swung and in one strike cut her in twain. From the center of her body leapt a bloody monster of nightmarish form. It battered away Mag’Nrs sword, and the knight’s other hand came up clenching his holy symbol. As the blood being struck the symbol, and was charged and changed by the force of Mag’Nrs faith. The rusty color seemed to drain from the beast, leaving blood in a big wet circle around it. What was left was an ink-black sleek creature. Like liquid death it flowed closer to Mag’Nrs its form half predatory cat, and half pure liquid. Flowing smoothly between each form until it was in front of Mag’Nrs and simpy sat. Its featureless face watched him, its eyeless visage tracking his every waver, every breath.

Reaching down into his faith he poured his will into the ink-like beast in front of him. It quickly darted away from him towards the body of the feral with the snapped back. It lifted the body up and carried it back to Mag’Nrs like a pet with its kill. As it was laying the body at Mag’Nrs feet, the knight wondered what sort of beast he had stumbled upon.

He played fetch with he creature as he continued his journey to return home. In his pack was the piece of the feral’s hand kept for the knights to restore when he arrived him.

Epilogue (known only to OtO)

Olgog the Olgog sat in his tent watching the sky above Refuge. It had been a tiring year living with Uhryu Bill and the Karovians. He always got death stares from that upstart Rapiog. OtO was ready to give the Mag’Ol another thrashing for the way he was running things. But he sighed. It wasn’t his place to lead the GulTor’Uf. He might be Bill’s son, but he had enough of the responsibility. He missed his missions. First with the EEF, then with VLAD. He wasn’t born for herding, or gathering. He knew he was at his best on the battlefield. Since his labors had not been yet completed, OtO couldn’t return to Mag Buskt…another frustration.

Then from the sky he watched a parachute open and a box drift lazily down to the sand. He ran over to it, noticing the EEF markings, and the seals on the box showed it was over a century old. OtO took a deep breath and tapped in his VLAD access code. A few seconds later the top of the box opened up and an earther voice could be heard.

“Agent Olgog the Olgog, by your request you have been selected for an important and vital mission.
Inside this box is experimental power armor optimized for the desert environment. Also included is a silent long range sniper weapon. You have now been inducted into secret operation Codename: OV Compatriots. Your target is a mercenary who goes by the handle Derlur the Nomad.
We believe he is somehow linked to the will controlling the Mag Der’al. He must be taken into custody and delivered to Lab OV-9 in the Karovian desert. This armor has the map to Lab OV-89 in its databanks. Once you collect, or convince Derlur to follow you, the doors to the Lab will open. Until then the Lab will remain closed to you.
The colonies salute you as a hero.”

OtO began getting into the armor. He never knew the box and its cryptic message had been sent by the Old Vlad, not by the actual VLAD Agency.

He did however notice the armor had no onboard communication system, no onboard hacking equipment, barely a computer to drive the power armor. OtO knew nothing of this Derlur the Nomad. But he knew the Mag Der’al had to be stopped. He shouldered the heavy quad laser with its massive capacitors and batteries and prepared to leave Karov behind for a short time.
