Goblin Lands 2 Intermission Event 4: Neliff Problems in the Goblin Lands

#1

Prologue: Why a caravan of high end salvage ended up in a Giant’s Pincer…
The Armies of Eloga had claimed these lands in the name of the Der’al Collective. Luckily for Godart there were no border guards preventing passage across their territory. Since the Elogans were used to Brezan and Karovian Nomads wandering through their territory they usually had a live and let live mentality about these things. But in this one situation, there were rumors of a known dangerous element the Infamous OtO making its way through the territory with huge amounts of military grade metals and plastics.
OtO hadn’t wanted to be here, but when the VofV pushed them out of the Beckett Corp Depot south of the Dead Dome, OtO was left without other options.
The UtR had closed borders preventing Airships from reaching them in UtR lands, and Godart was stuck with only one option move north into the more hospitable Der’al Collective lands. But things didn’t work out to his benefit, the Der’al Collective allowed free passage to many factions often considered undesirables in UtR lands. The least worrysome of these were the Ar’yeserai, more concerning the disease bringing Tor’lallur, and the most dangerous travelers in these lands were Yyan Giants who had been given free passage and a nonaggression pact with the Der’al Collective.

The Armies of Eloga had been kind enough to alert them to the two Yyan Giant packs that were closing on their position. Godart was stuck with a tough choice. Meet the Giants here…or try and run for the Karovian border.
Some negotiation by commcrystal had gained Godart the right to bring in allies among the Bruskti Airship pirates into Der’al Collective lands. The Bruskti would help extract them and their goods.
It hadn’t been a free interaction though, and nine Der’al Collective representatives, Olgogs of the Tor’lallur, the Army of the True Flame, and the Kolgul Militia, had arrived to pickup the border tariffs.
Each walked away with an armful of high end steel and aluminum salvage to Godart’s chagrin.
Turning southwest, the caravan of Hovertrucks, nomads dragging pallets, and their Artillery Strider began increasing their pace. The plan was to force the Giants onto advantageous terrain, where their size would work against them, and Godart’s defenders could use their unique talents.
Godart noticed Blake Arlash begin stalking off to flank the enemy. Seeing the Noble disappear into the shadows, he hoped their planning would be enough.

Part 1: A Squad too Late
Lurtor knew that going into a mission with so many unknowns was not good. But his new team members seemed all very powerful in their own rights. Also this mission fell inline with his more recent tendencies. He was starting to realize in the change from the assassin to the Knight of the Bladed Sun he was becoming. And it was those changes that were going to help them.

Lurtor had the group board the Lur Union Fighter. He made sure they had their weapons and armors back from before their capture. Lurtor also made sure each of them and the pilot of the Fighter had the group commcrystal.

Lurtor was surprised to see Lalon. Obviously Lalon was here to make sure the Fighter had full Leyas shield protection and get the crew out if needed. Lalon as an artificer could bounce even magi cannon fire, cloak the ship, or even teleport the gogs out. He was happy not to have to work about their safety, and that was probably Lalder’s plan.

As they reached the edge of Der’al Collective Airspace, Lalder said to the group “Remember, keep your distance from the Neliff infested host even if you think it is dead. We’ll use the radar to make sure no life signs in the corpse, and then we’ll pick it up. If the Neliff are still alive, we’ll shoot them more. I plan to create a Ice storm over the giants. This will shield us from view while providing a distraction. I don’t plan for the fighter to interview unless we need support as want to limit what magi cannon fire

Our objectives are: Kill the Neliff, Kill the hosts infected with Neliff, and if possible bring physical proof that the Neliff exist. This will be crucial to get the Der’al collective and some race to help exterminate them.

I can detect them by sight, I will relay which ones are infested and I already gave you the description of what Neliff look like.”
As the Lur Union fightercraft flew low over the sand, the VLAD squad dropped out.

Part 2: Neliff Negotiations
Neliff was the prophet, and all Neliff after the prophet worshipped Neliff as the right arm of Warmonger. All Neliff called themselves Neliff, and Neliff be as they are; predatory, raping, little monsters.
This particular Neliff was called Neliff (I see you are catching on now), and had come to Refuge alongside the fiend known as the Usurper. The Usurper had told Neliff and his fellow Neliff that this planet was a prime home for them.
Few here knew of them, and the planet was home to the doorways to the Prison Dimension that Warmonger was trapped in. Neliff could turn this planet into their new homeworld., The trillions of lifeforms on this planet were all viable hosts. And to top it all off, their nemesis the Quall N’drone Hordes were already hated and hunted by the sentients on this planet.
“Warmonger you are truly great,” whispered Neliff as he clutched tighter to the Yyan Giant’s neck, “Your servants have found us a true home. One day I hope to serve you as the next Neliff the Prophet. May I one day serve as a Hiveking to your greatness.”
As he prayed his mantras, Neliff’s tentacles extended down under the Giant’s armor. Three of his tentacles were plunged deeply under the flesh. Their semi-etheric nature meant no blood dripped, and no wound would be visible when he was done. But with how massive the Giant was, there was much flesh to implant. Even now, eggs flowed down his tentacles, each depositing in a different muscle group.

The fleshy giant would taste so good to the hatching Neliff. And Neliff knew he wanted his child-hivers to grow into hearty juveniles. Weeks before they had been driven out of their nest in the deserts by the Phantoms of Lord Roan Desdaemon. Neliff knew of the Lord Roan. Roan was a grandson of the Warmonger, a rebellious lord who had not yet been turned to Warmonger’s worship.
In communing with the Warmonger the Neliff had been commanded to flee and let Lord Roan and his comrades live. To use their great illusions to hide their escape, and let the Lord Roan think he had won. Each step part of Warmonger’s greater plan to corrupt and enslave his rebel grandson.
Neliff was a true believer, and did not mind the loss of their nest if it served Warmonger’s needs. Instead they had sent Neliff to join with the Giants of the Mountains. To gather the Yyan and their spawn, and turn them to the Neliff way. In constant mental connection with the Neliff at the Yyan Fortresses, the Neliff had easily taken and converted the leadership of the Warmonger worshipping Yyan Empire giants.
Each Neliff had become a holy symbol to the Giants, worn about the neck like a churcher wears his cross.
These living unholy symbols gave their blessings in many ways. The Giants never knew fear, they never knew regret. They felt like they were perpetually in their own personal heaven. They never noticed the eggs that the Neliff spawned in their flesh. Within days, the Yyan Empire had been overcome.
But this particular Neliff had never left the deserts. Instead he had been waiting for telepathic word from his Neliff in the forests between the Lost Colonies and the Goblin Lands. And the moment a large caravan carrying materials of a high enough quality for space travel passed through, his plans were already in motion.
They let the caravan pass out of the hidden Yyan kingdom. Once they were firmly in lands controlled by the Olgogs, the plan went into action.
Neliff commanded his personal Yyan, Shorn Gnash, to open negotiations when they finally reached the caravan. As his Yyan approached, the weapons of the caravan swiveled towards him.

“You Giant,” said one of the Olgog Gunners, “Our Boss was clear, that creature round your neck is not welcome.”
Shorn Gnash sneered, “You disrespect the most holy of holy symbols, the living faith? I see your kind is a bunch of intolerant people.”
Shorn didn’t understand the danger of the Neliff but then again neither did the Olgogs. Neliff was already close enough to begin altering the mind of the furthest Olgog.
The Olgog said, “It is all good, Godart said he couldn’t come near the caravan but…Mr. Giant if you are willing to negotiate our safe passage we will happily pay you… 100 tons of our salvage, 10lbs of zela dust and 5 lbs of gold.”
Shorn Gnash was taken aback for a moment. That was quite a bribe. Neliff reached up telepathically and commanded Shorn.
Shorn Gnash said, “Okay, tell your Godart that we will accept this payment. Drive it out to that hill right there, on the back of a single hovertruck.”
The Giant turned and walked back to his vanguard.
The Olgog gunners alterted Godart and OtO who couldn’t believe their luck. The yagogi had helped them find a good defendable ravine, but it seemed they might not even need it. They hauled out the bribe, and it was delivered to the agreed upon hill.
Neliff waited for this moment to deploy the gift they had received from the Usurper. A small amulet hung from his own neck, and it was artificed with powerful light leyas. Expanding it wide around the hill, he created a simple façade.
As far as Godart, OtO and Jamie saw, the hovertruck was quickly and efficiently unloaded by three Gunners and two Bruskti. Aided by other Yyan giants, while the Yyan captain and his strange living necklace just watched from a distance away.
Inside the façade, Neliff had already darted past the five workers and gently injected each of them with an egg. The eggs would hide themselves and their hosts wouldn’t know about them. The semi-etheric tentacles left no wound and no obvious injury. Their minds were equally touched by the Neliff. As far as the workers were concerned, the Neliff had stayed over by the
Returning to his position on the Sword Giant’s neck, Neliff ended the façade just as the unloading was done. The hovertruck returned to the caravan along with its crew.
Neliff glanced off to the side, noticing a flash of green fur. He signaled to Shorn Gnash who grabbed the small creature between its massive hands. Shorn lifted up a tiny Olgog. Neliff could sense something inside the tiny Olgog. Something that made him feel physically ill.
He approached the tiny being trying to reach inside the Olgog’s mind but instead found himself facing a strange sensation. The Neliff Hivemind knew the sensation, it was the touch of the Hivemind of the great Hivequeen Ar’yay. It was a Quall hivemind, and the Neliff Hivemind reached out to dominate it.
He found the Olgog’s name…Gobbog.
Neliff saw Gobbog struggling against his control. Neliff’s confusion grew with each passing moment. Somehow this variation on the Ar’yay Hivemind was immune to Neliff control. But its body was not immune to Neliff implantation. Neliff slammed his tentacles into Gobbog. Which brought a deep cry from the tiny Olgog.

Part 3: What Lorne saw…
From a nearby shadow, Black Lorne Harlas watched the Neliff toy with Gobbog.
He had been fooled by the façade like everyone else, but had stuck around to make sure Godart’s caravan safely escaped. The caravan had safely left, but he was here to see the implantation of Gobbog by the Neliff.
Before he could respond, Black Lorne watched as a skillful Olgog warrior leapt from the sands. Lorne recognized the Olgog as Kolgol, the Prophet of Kalok.
Kolgol’s war axe struck the Giant’s wrist, severing tendons. Gobbog’s body was released and fell towards the ground below. Kolgol followed his first strike up with a second axe wound to Gnash’s jugular. As the Yyan stumbled back, gripping his neck wound, Kolgol dropped down, sinking his axe into the giant’s hamstring.
The giant fell like a tree, pulling Neliff with him. Luckily for Kolgol Neliff was too distracted by Gobbog’s Ar’Yeserai larvae to see him. Kolgol never knew how close he came to falling under the monster’s control.
Lurtor rolled from a nearby shadow grabbing Gobbog before the tiny Olgog struck the ground. Dargor’lur stepped out, calling down a frost storm on the Giants to cover their escape.
Firing blast after blast of frost into the nearest Yyan, Dargor’lur realized there were a good twenty magi cannons pointed at them.
The Lur Union Fightercraft flew in at that moment drawing enough fire, that the VLAD squad could pull back. Lurtor might have missed what occurred during the trade, but he was the first to see the eggs implanted in Gobbog.
It took them twenty minutes of shadow jumping and stealthy backtracking to escape the Yyan Vanguard with Gobbog’s body intact.
In the cover provided by a sandy overhanging cliff, the VLAD squad regrouped and waited for pickup.
Black Lorne sneaked away through the shadows still confused over much of what he saw.

Epilogue

On a table, in front of Lurtor, Dargor’lur and Kolgol lay Gobbog. Lurtor spun out his combat knife and began cutting away at Gobbog’s flesh as quickly as he could. His only hope was to remove the parasite before it had a chance to birth itself, but he didn’t know that. Lurtor just knew the alien egg had to come out.
The flesh parted easily before Lurtor’s blade, and Kolgol and Dargor’lur held Gobbog down. Each slice issued a painful plaintative cry from Gobbog, but he could do little except suffer the pain.
Gobbog had felt the invasive power of the Neliff and it was terrifying. Now he suddenly understood why the Quall considered the Neliff the most dangerous species to have ever existed.
Finally Lurtor pulled the egg from the wound, using the techniques of the Shield of the Redeemer to find its corrupting spirit. Lurtor lifted up the sample container VLAD Agency had designed for this mission and placed the egg inside. It kept the egg and its tiny Neliff inhabitant in stasis but quite visible.
Gobbog was healed, and the four agents gathered around the sample they had found.
